Dear [Name(s)],

Monday, March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day and people around the world host activities and events to help raise awareness of what Down syndrome is, what it means to have Down syndrome, and how people with Down syndrome play a vital role in our lives and communities.

ROCK YOUR SOCKS FOR WDSD
One way you can celebrate WDSD is by joining the “Rock Your Socks” campaign! Rock Your Socks is a fun, simple way to start conversations that change hearts and minds. I hope [school/organization] will participate by encouraging everyone to rock their most colorful, fun, spunky socks to celebrate all the ways people with Down syndrome brighten our lives.

The Montgomery County Down Syndrome Interest Group (MCDSIG) created a flyer that you can share with others and hang up to spread the word. In many schools, the student councils have created additional bulletin boards and posters to hang around the school.

Teachers, guidance counselors and others also use this day to educate students about people with Down syndrome. Helpful videos and information for Explaining Down Syndrome are available on the MCDSIG website.

WHY ROCK SOCKS?
It’s fun!
It’s easy for people to participate!
It’s inexpensive!
It’s a conversation starter that can lead to changed minds and hearts!
…..And when you look at the karotype (picture), chromosomes look like bright colorful socks!
People with Down syndrome have an extra 21st chromosome (3/21!!!) and they rock it!

Thank you for helping us celebrate!
